    When to Visit Noosa

When to Visit Noosa and the Sunshine Coast.....good question.....
Well no time is a bad time but.....my picks would be Feb - April and Sept - Nov.

It is definitely wetter and more humid in Dec/Jan, but with the water temp around 25 Deg it won't stop your swimming and surfing, and the like......lovely balmy evenings around this time of year.

Winter has great clear days and around low 20's for the High's but it gets cooler either end of the day for sure, you will need an extra layer, and maybe even those cosy slippers, and a poncho style garment (are they still in fashion...?). If you are after a warm winter escape you really need to head further north to Cairns/Port Douglas.

Surfing at First Point - Noosa

    Saturday 14 May 2011

10 - 45 Mins by Car from Noosa

Hit the Road......well let's get in the car first. OK time to venture a little further out (man) from Noosa.

    Eumundi Markets
If it's a Wed or a Sat head to the Eumundi Markets from about 6.00am to 12pm. About a 20 Min Drive out the Noosa - Eumundi Rd.
It is one of the biggest markets around, if haven't been you've got to do it once. Give yourselves a good couple of hours to get around it all. While in Eumundi check out Berkelouw Book Store and Cafe on the main street. Joe's Waterhole is a great pub and band venue that has some great bands passing through, main street Eumundi check out their website.......Joe's Waterhole

    Montville - Mapleton and Maleny
The 'Hinterland' Drive is a must, a great escape from the coast and another facet to the Sunshine Coast. Allow a good few hours to a half day, you could spend more but it is up to you. It is about a 45 Min drive to reach Montville, Maleny a smidgeon further.

From Noosa head towards Nambour, and onwards to the small town of Mapleton, it is a great drive as you wind up onto the ridge with great views both sides. If you are feeling like a great walk the Kondalilla Falls near Montville are wonderful, about a 1-1.5hr return walk to the falls, which are very high, but you arrive at the top of the falls not the base, but there is a lovely swimming hole to reward you but it can be coolish, but clean, clean fresh water ! Element's Cafe nearby is excellent too.

Stop in Montville for a quaint village feel, many tourist style shops and good food options. The Poets Cafe being a favourite at the bottom of the hill. At the top of the hill as you arrive in Montville pull over and park on your left and through the little shopping complex you will find one of the best views of the Sunshine Coast ! Check out also Flame Hill Winery and Baroon Dam nearby, with a very steep road !
Continue on towards Maleny for a more earthy feel, with some cool cafes, but this is more of a real town than Montville which is really aimed at the tourist.
Your return drive from this area you should go another way back...through Palmwoods as a good option.

    Mooloolaba
Only about 30 mins Drive from Noosa south, Mooloolaba has a few cool things to see....The Kids will love Underwater World Queensland's largest Oceanarium (good word eh...). The Esplanade is great for a stroll, coffee and over the road the beautiful beach, which is fairly protected like Noosa's Main Beach and visit the "Loo with the View" ! Mooloolaba Wharf have a wander with a good selection of Resturant's, great fresh fish, and of course Fish and Chips !

    Yandina and the Ginger Factory
Well I would combine two things here......If you love Thai Food, you must go to the Thai Spirit House, near Yandina. Book ahead, it get's busy, this is a hidden gem but very popular with people in the know. A 20 Min drive from Noosa, and you can take the kids to the Famous Ginger Factory for all things Ginger and more, good family fun, but then time it with your Spirit House Booking (only 3 mins away). Opposite the Ginger Factory is Nutworks also, which is worth a visit.

Within 10 Mins of Noosa by Car

If you want to leave the Hastings St/ Noosa Main Beach Area ( and you should at some point ! ) here are a few things within 10 mins.

    Noosaville
Is an area based along the Noosa River. It is a lovely place to ride (or hire) a bike, with lovely walkways stretching for 1km or more along the river. It is a flat walk, drive, or ride from Hastings St, less that 5 mins in the car. Great for a picnic on the river side, feed the birds, listen to the really noisy birds on a summer's evening, do a spot of fishing, hire a small boat to go up the river, or even a jetski for the more adventurous.
There is a host of great resturants along Gympie Terrace as it is called, and also head into the smaller Thomas St Strip for more great food, excellent Indian, Thai, Burgers, Salad Bar, and the Thomas St Eatery on the corner of Gympie Tce.
On Gympie Tce, the classic Maisy's the oldest resturant on the strip, Grind a favourite for coffee and light meals, Gusto excellent food and great views.
    Noosaville River and Walkway
    Quamby Place
Is just off Noosa Parade before you get to Noosaville, only about 2 mins by car from Hastings St. You will find some excellent Resturants here. Ricky Ricardo's and Wasabi ( Japanese ) facing the Noosa River, Tempo for a more casual dining facing to the park on the side, and Rock Salt which is also excellent. There is even a great Fish and Chip shop here for Take Away. The park can be great for the kids to run around while waiting for your meals. You can also catch the Ferry to here , it leaves from the Sheraton, which is great at sunset !

    Noosa Junction
Is up and over the Noosa Hill from Hastings St  about 1km and an easy walk too. In the "Junction" you will find some good cafe's. Bean Drop on Noosa Hill, Canteen for great coffee, breakfasts and lunch (at the Noosa end of the Junction)
Subway / Video Ezy for a bigger DVD Hire Selection than on Hastings St. Wander along the Main Road ( Sunshine Beach Rd ) and you will find some great shops, your banks, supermarkets and the Noosa Cinema's (great for the odd rainy day), this area is really where the locals shop. Also see the road running parallel, Lanyana Way for a few cool shops, Franks Gym (iconic). From Lanyana Way you will see a big Coles Supermarket and the like if you want to stock up for your stay.  Continuing along Sunshine Beach Rd through the Junction, follow your nose (and some signs) about 2km's to..........

    Sunshine Beach Area
You can also get here via the National Park Coastal Walk which is stunning, a good 1.5hr Walk from Hastings St,then you can actually catch a bus back to Noosa.
The Sunshine Retail Strip is only small but good ! Great Coffee at Costa Noosa where they have their own roaster, Fratellini's also and light meals, Great Breakfasts at On the Deck. Dining at XO Bistro Lower Level and Upstairs more top end, The Marble Bar, great bar and light snacks alfresco on a Marble Bar funny that.............
About 200m from the shops you hit Sunshine Beach proper, and can see the beach stretch all the way down to Coolum and beyond. The Beach(es) on this east side are much more exposed that the Noosa Beaches and care should be taken with kids. The best time can be in the morning(s) before the Sea Breeze (Easterly) comes up, although around Winter you do not get so much wind.
Driving south on David Low Way now you will head past Castaway Beach , Marcus Beach and onto.....

    Sunshine Beach
    Peregian Beach
Here you will find a great beachside community, with some cool boutique shops and resturants centred around a village square, and only 50 metres from the beach. Great to come down grab a bite and have a stroll.
None of the 'big name' stores here, a more relaxed feel.
Coffee at Le Bon Delice (and the best baguettes on the coast), Raw Energy, Baked Poetry on the Square. More Dining at Pitchfork (often booked out !) Siam Spicy for great well priced Thai, Zachary's for Pizza . Some great Homeware and Gift Stores , Askew 2 related to Askew in NZ for you Kiwis, Finders Keepers another good store.
On the 1st and 3rd Sunday's of the Month there is the Peregian Original Concerts and Market before, good vibes on a nice day. There is also the Skatepark right near the beach.
Another 3 mins down David Low Way you will get to....

    Peregian Beach
    Coolum
Is a larger beachside town, also on the coast, with a good strip of cafe's and resturants, and shops opposite the beach (over the road from).  Some more mainstream shops here, banking, hardware etc. Head up Birtwell St for an extra little area worth looking at.
The Beach is wonderful at Coolum, but as Sunshine Beach can be more exposed, and larger waves than the Noosa Beaches. There is a fantastic walk around the waterfront at the south end of Coolum Beach around to the next bays through many different types of landscape.
Try Sunrise Cafe for great Coffee and Food just past the Beach Rd Turn off on David Low Way. On Beach Rd you will find the excellent Castro's Resturant and Cafe.

Looking towards Coolum Beach up to Peregian Beach
    Other Places
Sunday Mornings from 6.00am the Wonderful Noosa Farmer's Markets, on Wyeba Rd next to the Noosa Tigers Footy Ground, great produce, coffee, and breakfast, and brunch food....try the Omelettes near the Salmon Man, the best !!

The 'NAC' (National Aqautic Centre) Pools for all ages , 3 Mins from Noosa Junction, Skate Park right next door also, and Tennis Courts.

Visit the Noosa Springs Golf Club 5 mins from Hastings St. There is a wonderful Spa here, Gym,Tennis Courts place to have a coffee, and yes a Golf Course, a real sanctuary, as you drive down the treelined entrance.

    Hastings St - Other Things

The Information Centre is situated right near the Surf Club, have a chat to the lovely folk there for more help.
For your 'bits and pieces' you may need the 7-11 Store, 20 metres from the Info Centre, there is also another Convenience Store right behind Aroma's Cafe midway along Hastings St.

The Bakery is great on the beach side opposite Aroma's, and Great Burgers very close at Burger Edge. Sushi Train is good fun, just near 7-11.

As mentioned before the Bay Village midway along Hastings St non beach side, is where you can get your magazine fix, newspapers and the like. Also good cheaper food options. Mary Ryan's Books, a great travel store and more.
By the way if you have friends visiting, they can park out the back of Bay Village if they can't get a park on Hastings St.

Noosa Longboards is a must see, the Iconic Noosa Surf Shop, with more than just surfing gear.
Clothing, there is plenty of choice, for Women, and Men along the whole 'strip', make sure you go end to end ! The Peter Lik Gallery at the Noosa Woods end has stunning photographic images, it is his only store in Australia.

The Sheraton and Spa. Great Bar on Hastings St Large Screen TV's for watching the 'game', good atmosphere.

Things to do around Noosa On Foot

Well where do I start.......well here will do.....

As I said this is by no means a comprehensive list of things, but if you do all, or some of these things, I reckon you'll have a great time.

    NOOSA AREA
Noosa for the visitors is really based around Hastings St, which runs parallel to one the best protected North facing Bays in Queensland or even Australia, called Laguna Bay. It is a family friendly beach, which is very safe (well 90% of the time), but does boast one of the great Longboard Waves in World when the planets align...

If you are staying in Hastings St as many of you would, you are perfectly positioned.
Using your feet prepare to walk Hasting St and beyond.........

    Hastings St and Aroma's Cafe
Walk or Sit on the Boardwalk Look for the beach and there it is.....easy eh, this might just be the best place in Noosa on a good day, you just can't beat it. But if you want to get off your bums......

Walk to the National Park (to your right as you look at the Beach)
It's about 1 km to the start of the park then you have a choice of many walks up to 7km.
Stunning Coastal walks or through the Semi Rainforest.
At least walk to Tea Tree Bay about 7-8 mins from the start of the National Park, past the Boiling Pot Lookout, this would be my favourite bay and beach.....the kids love it too, great surf also.
Best times to walk are early before the heat of the day, and also around sunset and see the sun setting in the west, but watch out the sun goes down quickly it seems.

    Hell's Gate - Noosa National Park ( Looking at A'Bay )
Walk the Other End of Hastings St (to your left as you face the Beach)
Walk past where the shops end into Noosa Woods. You can either walk along the river side or along the beach, past the Groyne to the Rivermouth (about a 20 min return trip). The Beach past the Groyne is often less crowded than "Main Beach" and there is Learn to Surf Lessons there too.

Walk up to the Noosa Lookout from the right end of Hastings St. About a 10 min Walk up for great views of Noosa, and about 3 mins coming down if you run quickly !

Hey Bill's Shaved Ice on the Beach
    After your Walk
You'll want a good coffee, food or both.
Well too many good options here to list them all but here's a few to start....

Coffee you can't beat Aroma's, midway along Hastings St with the Chairs that face the street, great coffee, snacks, and staff. The Early Morning Coffee Cart at Le Monde opposite the Surf Club great also and great food all day too. Also as you arrive back into Hastings St you will see the first restaurant right on the Beach Sails, which is a wonderful restaurant, but they also serve Coffee in the morning only, coffee and a muffin with the best views !
Ice Cream, you must visit Massimo's at the right hand end of Hastings St (looking at the beach)
Boost Juice near Aromas for great Juices
Snacky type things....Subway, Kebabs and the like head into Bay Village (Midway along Hastings Non Beach Side)
Bistro C, great for Breakfasts through Dinner, and one of the few restaurants with true beachfront, next to Berardo's on the Beach with great views on the Boardwalk.
The Surf Club has Great Views and good meals for the whole family, bustling atmosphere.
Season's a great resturant with less hustle, great food more mid priced though.

A great place to watch the sun go down is a little bar at the 'back' of the Sheraton, good wine list, cocktails, it looks up the river. You might even see the Local Gondolier man taking off for an evening jaunt, which by the way is a great way to cruise around the Noosa Riverways, worth the treat.

    The Very First Blog

Well here I am Blogging for the first time....and why not ?

Living in Noosa we get so many visitors to our home and our retail store ( Askew 2 in Peregian Beach ) and we are constantly being asked about things to do in and around Noosa.

So.......why not put it on your nice shiny computer screen rather than scribbles on a scrap of paper that will probably end up in the bottom of your bag with many other similar scraps of paper.

So....I will attempt to post some things that you may like to do in and around Noosa.

This is by no means going to be a comprehensive compilation of things to do and see, but it will get you started.

Look to the left and you will see more 'blogs' about Noosa Life , get out and enjoy it....!
